I do quite a lot of these already..but I've never seen the bedding storage idea before. I am SOO going to rearrange my bed linen cupboard tomorrow. Thank you. ❤@marytolhurst5165bedding
I'm a maximalist but I find your ideas very interesting especially the Friday routine.@janphilpot406Friday routine
Hello, I liked your very calm presentation. My son and wife and 2 babies just moved to snowy mountain life and I see a couple great tips for them. One is the boot tray and the other is the low coat rack for kids. Oh yes, and the key and mail cupboard.@DeborahCrosby-t5ofront door
Lots of practical wisdom in what you say. Thankyou.@carolclearwater9405home habits
We turn on our whole house exhaust fan for a few minutes while the windows are open and the fresh air comes in quickly! Lovely! Thank you for your videos - I really enjoy them. Many I have been doing already, but have picked up several more that I plan to do in our home. God bless you.@bobbiefarrar3036airing
The dish drying cabinet and heated towel rail sound pretty clever. I wish I could do that.@amyfrancis9423kitchen

And when it is time to let go of things, gently.

Döstädning is something my mother and grandmother did all their lives: calmly sorting through your things while it is still easy, so your family is never left with the job. The workbook is the calm, step-by-step way to do it at your own pace.

  • The right order: big storage spaces first, photos and letters last
  • A box for every room, and the private box only you should see
  • The collector in the house: bringing a reluctant spouse along

7The honest part

This book is not here to tell you American homes are wrong.

Most of these ideas began as somebody's answer to a cold, wet climate and a small house. Many of you already do half of them. The book gives you the rest, the version that fits your house, and the cost before you start.

It is for you if

  • The same small messes come back every week
  • You want a calm house without cleaning all weekend
  • You like a fix you can copy cheaply, in a weekend
  • You want clear steps, not just pretty pictures

It is not for you if

  • You want a remodel or a contractor's plan
  • You need floor drains or wall-hung toilets to be happy
  • You want a design magazine full of expensive rooms
  • You love your house exactly as it is (keep it that way)

8About Linnea Holm

A note from the author

I am not a designer. I just run a house the way I was taught.

I grew up in a red-painted family house in Uppsala. My mother and my grandmother ran it the old Swedish way: shoes off at the door, a drying cabinet in the laundry room, a place for every single thing, a deep clean every spring, and döstädning, the calm habit of sorting through your things while you still can.

I studied, I married, I have two children, and today I run a busy family home of my own. It is not a museum. There are school bags and wet mittens and a husband who keeps receipts. I still do everything the way I was taught, because it simply works.

I started making videos after American friends kept asking me the same three things: why my home feels so calm, why my laundry dries so fast, and why I own so little but never seem to be missing anything. Nobody in my family ever wrote any of it down. So I did, room by room, and I found the American version of every fix, because a Swedish answer is no use if it does not fit your house.

“A calm house is not a bigger house or a richer house. It is a house where everything has a place, and the place is easy.”

10Questions

Questions, answered plainly

I'm not handy. Do I need tools or a contractor?

No contractor. Most of the 45 fixes are about where things go and when, not about building. The three that need building, the dish cabinet, the drop zone and the linen cupboard, come with drawings and a shopping list, and I tell you plainly when a fix needs a drill.

Will it work in my house and my climate?

That is why I wrote it. Every fix comes with the American version. There is a chapter on keeping a house cool in the South, and nothing in the book needs a floor drain or a wall-hung toilet.

I rent. Is it still useful?

Yes. Most fixes move things, not walls: the drop zone, the sheet sets, the baskets, the Friday Tidy. For the cabinet conversion I tell you to ask your landlord first.

I'm not good with computers. How does this work?

You click the button and pay through Gumroad's checkout, the same kind big stores use. The book comes to your email within a minute or so. You open it on your phone, tablet or computer, and you can print any page. Nothing is shipped and there is no account to make.

Can I buy it for my mother or my daughter?

Of course. Gumroad's checkout lets you send it as a gift, or you can forward the email to them.

What about death cleaning?

The gentle, everyday version is in the main book, one drawer a week. The full step-by-step way, with a box for every room and the talk with your children and spouse, is the companion workbook. You can add it with both books.

Is this a subscription?

No. One payment, the book is yours, and the updates are free for life.

What if it is not for me?

Read it within 30 days. If it is not for you, email me and you get a full refund.

Friday comes every week. Next Friday, the house resets in twenty minutes.

45 small Swedish fixes, the American version of each, and what it costs. Start with the front door this weekend.
